Seijigiri returns after a long winter break. Garrett and Ken are back and are joined once again by special guest Albrecht Stahmer.

This edition of Seijigiri, a podcast focusing on Japanese politics, brings a special discussion on the issues that promise to shape Japan’s political discourse over the coming year. Garrett, Ken and Albrecht discuss Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s situation, the recent scandals involving three powerful government figures, Japan and the United Nations, regional power, how the economy might affect Abe’s future, Keidanren’s projections for the economy, the upper house diet election coming up in July, and how the DPJ and Ichiro Ozawa figure into the mix.

Correction: While discussing Farm Minister Matsuoka’s scandal, we said WBEF was basically his firm. It isn’t (as far as we know.) We deeply regret the error.

Missed your program and was delighted with the copmmenatry on the Jan 5 podcast. You are better every time. Since I was around during the China invasion 70 yrs. ago and read the Life mags repoprting on it and have read books on the atrocities, I can see such a dilemma on any cooperation between the countries-but who would know how rich and huge China has gotten. They now scare everyone.

The program is very insightful and helps navigate through the Japanese political spectrum of views.

What I’d like is a Seijigiri special on Japan’s relations with India. Following Mr. Singh’s visits, Japan seems to be inclined to look at India afresh. What is the mood on the ground - what about the various factions inside the Jiminto? Is Abe-san isolated on this and will his opinion be submerged by the Atlanticist-influenced voices inside the Jiminto?

Suresh, Thanks for your comment. I’ve actually been looking at the state of Japan/India relations. I’ve seen some interesting data and would like to find a way to work it in to our format…hopefully soon.
