State of the Trans-Pacific Radio for August
Last month, when I sat down to write this, we were quite happy that we had passed the mark of moving over 2 gigs of audio to our listeners each day. I was a bit worried about July and August, however, since they do tend to be slow months for many websites, and many people are on vacation. In July, however, we moved over 2.5 gigabytes a day, which was about a 25% increase in daily listens. We found that our new releases were being listened to much more heavily than those that were released a few months back.
We also see a bit of a distorted “Long Tail” effect kicking in. We have some releases from earlier in the year that are now listened to more times in a month than they were in the months they were released. As the number of RSS subscribers is increaing steadily, part of this has to do with new RSS subscribers who grab all releases in a given category.
In July, the number of visitors increased by a little over 10%, and the number of pages viewed increased by just under 18%. This was slightly better than I expected, and it seems as though August might end up with similar numbers.
BizCast Japan #6 was the most listened-to release in July, and it was the second time that BizCast has held the top spot, with the other being BizCast #2 back in April. Debito Arudou lent his hand as a news reader for the July 27 edition of TPR News, and that release has been popular as well. Finally, Debito also appeared on our pre-election special edition of Seijigiri, which has been very popular.
In July, there were 11 audio releases. Seven were original and four were Old-Time Radio re-releases. Here are the top five original releases by number of listens:
- BizCast Japan #6: July 9
- Seijigiri #27: July 1
- Seijigiri #29: July 29
- Seijigiri#28: July 17
- TPR News for July 21
A lot is on tap for August. We’ve already published one interview with Debito Arudou as part of our Spotlight series, and the second part of that interview will be published soon. BizCast Japan will return from summer holiday in a few short days, and a new TPR News release is only hours away. Finally, we’re excited about Sam Porter’s new column, which will be published on August 20. Stay tuned, and thank you for listening.
