Have a Drink and Help a Wrongfully Imprisoned Man

Do you find yourself reading the news, reading blogs, listening to podcasts, watching TV, and wishing someone would do something to right all the wrongs?

Do you want to help out, get involved?

Are you a generally socially concerned, helpful person?

Do you want to meet some activists and commentators?

Do you like an occasional tipple?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you’re in luck. (If you answered “no” to all of them, turn off your computer now, go outside, and talk to the first person you meet. Regain your humanity.)

This coming Saturday evening (October 20th), TPR’s Ken Worsley and Garrett DeOrio will be joining Debito Arudou, Chris Pitts of Amnesty International, and a host of other activists, bloggers, concerned folks, and lovers of a good time to head to Big Ys Cafe in Yokohama, where they shall eat, drink, be merry, and help out a very worthy cause.

Why?

The proprietor of Big Ys Cafe is Osayuwamen Idubor, who was arrested in January and, despite not having been convicted due to his not having had a trial, there being no physical evidence of his crime nor any credible circumstancial evidence, and his suffering from declining health, continues to languish in jail. (If you are not familiar with Mr. Idubor’s case, click the link now.)

Whatever your opinion of Mr. Idubor’s case may be, we trust you will agree that violations of the law are wrong, that violations of human rights are wrong, and that holding a man for nine months without a trial, despite an exculpatory investigation, and withholding proper medical care in the process, is a violation of both. It is wrong.

As Mr. Idubor is kept from his business and has his finances drained by that and by legal expenses, Big Ys Cafe is being run by his wife, who needs your help.

The details are as follows:

Big Ys Cafe

横浜市 中区 山下町106-3 ラポール元町104
Yokohama-shi Naka-ku
Yamashita-cho 106-3
Laport Motomachi 104
Tel. 045-662-2261
It’s open from 18:00 till morning. Map downloadable in Excel and htm
format:

Please come out and help by having a few drinks. How easy is that? You can also meet some people. We’re all nice guys, we’re looking forward to meeting each and every one of you.

If you need more info, just get in touch with us or Debito.

See you then. Thanks.

I live far, far away, but is there any way I can donate a beer or two? Can I send you guys the money or something? I hope so.

Either way, have a few for me. Then a few more because that’s what I’d do.

I’ll forward this to people I know who are still living in the Greater Kanto area and tell them to go.

YES! Yes, you certainly can. That’s a good idea. E-mail us ASAP.

For those who want to go, it is next to the expressway, near both Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minato-Mirai line (港みらい線の元町・中華街駅), which is closest, and Ishikawa-cho Station on the Negishi line (根岸線の石川町駅).

From Motomachi-Chukagai Station, go out Exit 3, look for the expressway, go towards it, turn right on the parallel road, go about two blocks, Laport Motomachi will be on your right.

From Ishikawa-cho Station go out the exit on the North side of the expressway/river and follow the opposite directions of those from Motomachi-Chukagai. In other words, go towards the expressway, turn left, go along the parallel road. Laport Motomachi will be on your left. If you hit Motomachi-Chukagai Station, you’ve gone a bit too far.

If you know how to get to Chukagai (Yokohama Chinatown), you’ll be in the right neighborhood. If you want to go, but are worried about being able to find it, please e-mail us, so we can help you out - transpacificradio(at)gmail.com.

If you’re coming from Tokyo, get the Tokyu-Toyoko (東急東横線) line from Shibuya. At Yokohama Station, it becomes the Minato-Mirai line.

Well, we went down and had a good turnout. We met Mr. Idubor’s lawyer, had some productive conversations, played darts, and had a lot of great food and drink. I’m serious, as if one needed another reason to go to Big Ys Cafe, it’s a really nice place with whole roasted chickens. Awesome.

We’re going again. You should, too.

Yeah, that chicken was fantastic!

I knew I was home when I saw those things roasting out front.

Oh, and Mrs. Idubor is a class act. Even with all the stress she’s under, she was a gracious hostess, a fantastic good, an able bartender, and, of course, the person who tied all the threads of her husband’s case together for us.

If nothing else, drop in, have a beer, and offer your support. (Again, it is a nice place.) Although, if you do drop in for a beer and don’t end up ordering a chicken, you might as well be a vegan because you’re clearly missing the point of eating meat.
