What surprises me most about Fukuda's video, even beyond the fact that he decided to make one in English, is that he decided to make one in English and talk, at least glancingly, about some real issues - he didn't go 100% for the vague "Japan wishes you a happy New Year and hopes to continue working for good stuff."

Aso would have had better videos, though. He could have given a discourse on manga punctuated by awkward racist and/or factually incorrect statements bookended by rousing numbers from AKB48 or something like that.

Perhaps what all the parties need to do is engage in a little rumpshaking on YouTube - maybe they could do some really awkward lip-synching, too.

Amphibian, I agree that they're not even remotely interesting, but given that they are PR, it's only natural for a strong party slant to come out.

I think they would be better going the interview format route for most of these pieces. That could possibly lend to a more informal, conversational discourse that might even come across as more natural.

Klebs, I don't think any other parties have their own channel on You Tube yet. I wouldn't be too surprised to see the SDP or JCP set one up this year. As far as the DPJ goes...perhaps they'll do something just to play catch-up, though I wouldn't expect to see much of a strategy behind it.

I had been watching some of those videos and they're about as exciting as watching paint dry! It's great that the LDP is opening up to youtube, but the channel is so for seriously BORING. You can get about 5,000 views by shaking your butt in front of a camera, easy. This shows that most people out there just don't care.

This one about the JSDF in the Indian Ocean
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Lj1i1zmSx-Y&feature=PlayList&p=1EB684DF6D1AED57&index=7
was about the closest to interesting as any of the videos got. But they're long winded, and everyone knows that it will be soaked in party propaganda.

And about the comments, they allow them, but monitor them - so you post and then wait for it to be approved, then it appears. I've tried to leave a few... none of them have been approved. This might be one reason the videos are so void of comments.

Great stuff! This is a very interesting turn for the LDP. Do any other parties from other countries have a You Tube presence? It's amazing that they leave comments open.
