Marcus, this is definitely months old info. Police press clubs are well known for sitting on info for months and months before releasing it. I'd guess the visit of Hawker's parents also put a bit of pressure on them, which caused the release of backlogged info. Ken, I thought it was Gyotoku, too.

I agree that either the information that he is hiding out in Ikebukuro is outdated, police want him to move and the story is some kind of ruse, or this is yet another example the Japanese police force taking the Keystone Cops as their model. Anyone familiar with the case will recall Ichihashi's farcical escape. The police must be desperately trying to demonstrate their resolve in getting their man.
