Black Stripe Theater presents

Black Stripe Theater will present Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter’s “The Homecoming “on July 4-5-6 at the Theatre Atelier Fontaine in Azabu Juban.

The Homecoming is the kind of play for which you would do well to prepare yourself, so be warned what you are getting yourself into: a lethal, haunting drama about familial one-upmanship, seduction, lust and betrayal.

Brilliant dialogue, dark humor and an air of menace have long marked it out as one of Pinter’s finest and most important works.

Set in a North London house, The Homecoming centers on the suffocating relationship of tyrannical father Max, his sons, Lenny and Joey, and his brother, Sam.

The bitter all-male family unit is upset by the arrival home of eldest son Teddy, visiting from America for the first time after eight years with his wife Ruth.

This dark, dark comedy drama explores the themes of oppression, violence, sexuality and power as the male family members vie to exert their dominance over the new female in the house.

And you thought your family should be straight jacketed!

Opening in 1965 The Homecoming has enjoyed critical success winning a Tony Award, the Whitbread Anglo-American Theater Award, and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. Revivals on Broadway and London’s West End in 2008 continue to shock audiences after 50 years.

Harold Pinter also won the Noble Prize in Literature in 2005, the same year he announced he was finished as a playwright to concentrate on political activism and poetry.

Following Saturday and Sunday matinees director Walter Roberts will hold an audience talk and answer questions about the production.

Show times for The Homecoming are Friday July 4th at 7:30 pm, Saturday July 5th at 2:00 and 7:00 pm and Sunday July 6th at 2:00 and 6:30 pm. Tickets 3,000 yen. Student price 2,500 yen.
