April 2009 Central League Status Report

NPBWe’re already through with the first month of the baseball season, so here’s our review of how things currently stand in the Central League.

As of the time of this recording, things were largely shaping up as we had predicted in our Central League Preview podcast which was published last month. In other words, Yomiuri is at the top of the league, and Yokohama is at the bottom.

However, things are quite a bit tighter from first through sixth than we had anticipated. That means that there’s a significant amount of competition for the three Climax Series playoff spots at this point, and while it’s still early, all six clubs are currently in with a shot.

For additional information and discussion related to the 2009 baseball season, check out Tsubamegun.

Many thanks to everyone who continues to listen!

Quick tip: keep the volume down low. We’re still finding our way around the ’studio’, and the result is that there’s some background noise involved at higher volume levels. We’ll get that sorted out soon, but in the meantime, please accept our apologies for the lack of production skills on our part.

Yay! More pod casts (CL and PL).

I listen to them on my commute home as I have no interest in reality TV (that’s all London’s free commuter ‘newspapers’ are full of) and I’m bored with Swine flu and the economic down turn?

Dave,

A good way to describe ‘Bovril’ to your listeners might be to call it British Miso?

YOU have GOT to make Mr Pellegrini some hot buttered brown toast with a smear of Bovril on it, YOU WILL ROCK HIS WORLD!

I know a lot of ‘septics’ (Septic-tank, Yank?) who struggle with the whole vegi/marmite thing but Bovril is a different matter altogether?

It is the Champagne Krug of meaty/yeasty spreads.

Keep up the good work…

Hi Phil.

Thank you for continuing to listen and for the comments!

I may well have to knock up some Bovril on toast and force feed it to Chris at the beginning of the next podcast. Not sure Bovril goes well with beer though, but if we drink that stout from last time then it may work….

The next instalment should be towards the back-end of June as we’ll be reviewing the 2009 Interleague games and see where they leaves things in the CL and PL.

“meaty/yeasty”?

Please tell me it’s not actually meaty, as in containing meat.

Do you guys have a lock on the market of British baseball fans or do they just comment with greater frequency? Very cool.

Meaty it is indeed, though it wasn’t for a while a few years back. It used to be known as “Beef Tea” though I much prefer “Beef Juice” (and I may be alone there).

And as for having a lock on British baseball fans I think Phil is probably 50% of the UK’s total of baseball fans so you may be right…….(I jest of course).

Jack,

It’s SO meaty that I stopped eating it a few years back when mad cow disease was all the rage?

On toast it tastes like Vegemite (the Aussie yeast spread) and as a hot drink it’s a
miso-esque clear beef soup. In the winter, in the lower leagues, it’s the traditional beverage accompliment to a meat pie at a football match?
There’s probably more meat in the Bovril than in the pies!

Dave,

I probably am 50% of the UK’s JAPANESE baseball fan base, most fans over here (and there ain’t many as you’ll know) are into MLB and nothing else?

Me, I’m all about Beisbol, Can-Am, Cape Cod, Honkball and Yakyu.

I only get interested in the US majors when I can’t find anything else baseball related to read or listen to?

I’m a bit schizoid at the moment, looking forward to the 2009 World Cup but saddened by the fact that team GB are all ex. pat. Aussies, Cannucks, Septics and Seth Efricans to a man?

Team GB are in the same group as Japan, Nicaragua and Russia?

Played 3, lost 3 then. I’ll consider it a moral victory if ‘we’ go a full nine innings against anyone, assuming they’ll be some kind of ‘slaughter’ rule where the game is called if one side are getting a thrashing?
